The newly formed parish fire brigade and engine in 1903. The manual fire engine (which was vermilion) was bought new for the town in 1837 by the Essex and Suffolk Fire Office (a Colchester based fire insurance company). It was made by Merryweather's of Long Acre London, in a factory which was itself later destroyed by fire.
