Highfields was the sporting centre of Coggeshall in the early part of the 20th century with football matches held there and tennis courts laid out in the summer - the nets can be seen in this view lying on the grass. There was a windmill here in medieval times and the lane which leads up from West Street and past Highfields was called Wyndmellehach in 1376 and Windmill Gate Lane in 1604. The house was destroyed by fire in 1977 but rebuilt.
