This area where Church Green, The Colne Road and Dead Lane/St Peter's Road meet was called 'Appleton's Corner' probably from Walter Appleton, who was for many years a wood and coal dealer at Church Green who was born around 1854. On a map of 1731 it was recorded as Monk Green and at this time the field where the cottages stand was called 'The Pitts'.
