By Jan Spencer: Very interesting! Love Coggeshall and its history.
By Laura Hurst: Fascinating, but incredibly sad. Poor girl and her family.
By Rita Ratcliffe: Very interesting.
By Kerry Flitter: Fantastic stuff! I will definitely be taking a walk out there . . .
By Annette Newlove: Loved this little piece of history. I love family history and have managed to make a connection with Edith on my family tree. It is very distant and by marriage but her older sister Eliza Jane Wilby married James Potter who is my 4th cousin 3x removed! Such a sad story but so intriguing. My dad lived near here when he was a youngster and was always playing in the fields. Will have to ask him if he remembers or knows of 'The Devil's Hole'. Thanks for posting x
By Barney Stinton: My son and I visited on Saturday. I can imagine that in the winter months it can get quite deep. But to drown in the summer months would take some effort.. and to be found face up? Sounds like foul play to me.
By Annette Newlove: Spoke to my dad and to my uncle. Both knew of the pond and both remembered the pond as having a strange name but couldn't recall what it was. They remembered being warned not to go anywhere near it. They both remembered a footpath leading from Hill and Mount Rd that led directly to it. Dad said it was amongst a lot of trees and quite well hidden. They lived in a cottage in Surrex and then moved to Mount Rd so spent a lot of time in the area. They heeded the warnings and frequented a pond that was on the Feering side of Colchester Rd instead x
By Emily Bemelmans: Fascinating stuff. We visit there regularly, when its nice and full our shepherd likes to take a dip in it. Its gotten harder to get down to it though so she doesn't swim so much anymore. Thisis a fascinating piece of history. The more I learn, the more I grow to love living here
